Interview: Veerle Pieters

by EMPRNT | 4 Comments | Posted in Interviews

Veerle Pieters

Founder of Duoh! n.v, Veerle Pieters is a highly accomplished web designer, speaker and coder. In a pre-dominantly male field, Veerle not only thrives but excels and is one of leading voices in web design.

What was the first design book you owned?

My first book is called ‘Illustration Workbook’ from 1992 by Scott and Daughters.

Do you see books as a way to get inspired, or do you just like the tangible feeling you get from a book? For example, the glossy paper, cool cover, or ink smell.

A bit of both. Books can be very inspiring and on the other hand also touch your senses by the way it is printed, paper used varnish, and of course the smell. I feel it is extremely satisfying when you hold something printed in your hands, it’s a like a bit of personal touch that is missing when you design for the web.

What’s the last design book you purchased?

Geometric (Graphic Art and Pattern Fonts) by Kapitza

What’s your favorite book not related to design?

‘Gone for good’ by Harlan Coben for now :) It could change as I am a Michael Connelly fan as well.

You’re pretty heavily involved with Expression Engine, do you recommend any books about that particular CMS?

The Building an ExpressionEngine Series - Small Business book (More a tutorial style book than a explanation to use that particular feature). Building Websites with ExpressionEngine 1.6, and although it’s not a book I still highly recommend: The EE screencasts.

Considering the popularity of your blog, is there any plans to write a book in the future?

There have been a few offers so far, but nothing that would make it interesting enough to just focus on writing that particular book. Working and writing a book aren’t a good combo you know. For me personally it has to replace what I would have earned if I stayed working, otherwise it isn’t a good move business wise. I’m not interested in writing one just to say I am an author.

I’m not a web designer so I can’t really comment on the Expression Engine and CMS stuff, but I have followed her blog for the past year or so and I think she has some great tips on a lot of different aspects of design—I especially enjoy the illustrator tutorials. oh and her freckles are awesome!

I actually got to see some of the work she’s done with EE 2.0 last year at SXSW. The “hype” is actually pretty well deserved.

Never understood the hype behind her, seems to only be within the web 2.0 blogger nob set

Also wanted to note that Veerle is helping with the much anticipated Expression Engine 2.0 design.
